The IAADFS Show — Nearly 50 years of industry support

By Michael Payne, President and CEO, IAADFS

The IAADFS is proud this year to be celebrating the 49th anniversary of the Duty Free Show of the Americas, the longest-running event for the duty free and travel retail industry. The combination of a robust exhibit hall and the numerous opportunities for networking and relationship building creates a strong business environment for all attendees.

While the IAADFS show provides a venue for this important gathering, it also does so much more. The show serves as the primary funding source to support the association’s advocacy and government relations programs on behalf of association members and the industry as a whole. Revenue generated from registration and space rental fees is reinvested by the association into advocacy efforts to protect and advance the interests of the industry. IAADFS also provides charitable contributions for disaster relief efforts and donates toward industry-supported charitable campaigns.

Due to the global nature of the duty free and travel retail industry, challenges can emerge at any time, anywhere in the world. Some challenges provide opportunities for proactive action, while others, such as natural disasters or disease outbreaks, are situations that can only elicit a reactive response. In any event, we must be ready to stand up for the interests of our industry and to react appropriately to challenges that we face.

The funding support provided by the show allows IAADFS to monitor and respond quickly and effectively whenever necessary, and to coordinate efforts with other industry partners as appropriate. Examples of activities that have benefited from the show, and therefore benefited the industry as a whole, include the actual authorization of statutes officially creating duty-free, establishment and expansion of duty-free allowances, issues surrounding the transportation of liquids and gels through airport security, protection for specific products offered for sale in duty free/travel retail stores, labeling, paperwork reduction for bonded warehouses, and raising the overall awareness and appreciation of the value duty free/travel retail provides for airport operations.

IAADFS would like to thank the many companies that support the association and the Duty Free Show of the Americas through their contributions as attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors. We urge you to remember that you are contributing to the welfare of the industry by enabling IAADFS to support worthy causes and activities around the world.
